Fefu and Her Friends confronts society. I perceive this play as a contemporary Greek tragedy where the sacrifice is women. Of course, it isn’t not an appreciation of this kind of sacrifice. It’s a critique.
Fefu and Her Friends confronts form. It’s not a realistic play. Nor is it absurd or surreal. It is comedic. It is tragic. It is hyperreal. It is magical. It is all of these and none at the same time. It is like its name. It is drama and her friends.
Fefu and Her Friends confronts spectators. It’s not a play that you can consume. Even if you don’t want to move, the play will move you. Literally and metaphorically. It will ask you to change places, it will ask you to be distant. At times it will become very intimate. You will love it or hate it. Take it or leave it. It’s up to you.
Fefu and Her Friends confronts the creative team. It has asked a lot from actors, designers, and tech. It’s a play that needs patience, understanding, community, and isolation. It has sure been a collective and individual journey to a place within.
