Machinal is a play written in 1928 by Mexican-American playwright and journalist Sophie Treadwell. It was inspired by the real-life case of convicted murderer Ruth Snyder, which Treadwell personally covered. The play is thematically and stylistically ahead of its time, as it reveals the oppressive societal forces that drive a woman to extreme measures in her quest for self-expression and love.
